Romanian VC GapMinder leads €2.6M($3M) seed round in Slovenian startup Codeplain, alongside Silicon Gardens. The investment will fund an AI platform that generates production-ready code from plain-language software specifications. Silicon Gardens, a founders-for-founders VC firm with ties to Sportradar, Outfit7, Photomath, Microblink, and Celtra, co-led the round.

Rethinking how software gets built

The idea behind Codeplain is a shift in how developers and AI coding agents work. Instead of writing code directly, they write and maintain structured specifications — Codeplain handles the generation, testing, and updating of the underlying codebase automatically.

The company calls this approach "Phoenix Architecture," a concept popularized by software entrepreneur Chad Fowler. The premise: software should be continuously regenerated from durable specifications rather than maintained as an ever-growing, increasingly complex codebase. Specifications become long-term assets; code becomes something that gets generated and regenerated on demand.

Agentic coding tools are producing far more code than before, and the maintenance burden is growing with it.

"Agentic coding is giving the industry 10 times more code. But unless we fundamentally rethink maintenance, software teams are going to drown in the complexity created by that explosion."

— said Dusan Omercevic, founder and CEO of Codeplain.

Early customers include DevRev, HYCU, and Incode, which use the platform to maintain integrations with frequently changing external APIs. When an API changes, teams update the specification and regenerate the implementation, rather than manually reworking code.

Codeplain was founded by Omercevic, who previously built Cleanshelf, an enterprise SaaS management platform acquired by SAP LeanIX in 2021. After the acquisition, he led product development at SAP LeanIX, and before that served as VP of Product at Zemanta, which was acquired by Outbrain. The company operates from offices in Ljubljana, Berlin, and San Francisco.

For GapMinder, this investment continues a focus on AI and software companies across Romania and Eastern Europe. Recent additions to the portfolio include InsiderCX (patient experience platform), Design Verse (AI platform for enterprise software), SalesTools (B2B sales automation), VoicePatrol (AI voice moderation for multiplayer games), and Etiq AI (AI output verification).

"Codeplain is rethinking how software is built in the AI era by shifting the focus from writing code to managing specifications. We believe this approach has the potential to make software development faster, more reliable and easier to maintain as AI adoption accelerates,"

— said Cosmin Ochisor, Partner at GapMinder Ventures.
