This week, The Recursive podcast introduces you to one of the most influential people in tech in Europe. Mike Butcher has also advised UK Prime Ministers and the Mayor of London on tech startup policy.

He is the founder of the [non-profit Techfugees](https://techfugees.com/?ref=therecursive.com). A global organization providing tech solutions for displaced people.

In his conversation with Irina, Mike Butcher shares how he found out his passion for journalism but also what is the importance of storytelling in entrepreneurship.

“50% of being an entrepreneur is about communication, because you’re trying to change the world. You must begin an educational process, you have to tell a story”, he explains.

As an editor-at-large at Tech Crunch, Mike is pitched numerous tech stories per day. Naturally, he also gets to see the major pitfalls startup founders make when pitching their product. “The biggest problem is that they don’t describe the problem they are trying to address”, Mike Butcher says.

In the episode, he also shares his observation on the growth of the European tech ecosystem, the unique advantages of Eastern Europe when it comes to innovation, and reflects whether regulations are a hurdle or an opportunity for tech businesses.

He offers his view on what’s the best use of public money to fuel innovation. “Public money should be spent on the fundamentals, like R&D in universities and education rather than governments trying to pick the winners in a very complex and fast-moving markets”, Mike Butcher explains.
